Bayview YMCA's Employment Services Program, offering the tools to succeed

Maggie is a very bright and lively senior at the Burton High School. She’s an outstanding student, with a leading position at the Burton Basket Ball Team. Next fall she will be attending the San Jose State University. Since her participation of the Employment Services Program, she has completed her professional resume and cover letter, and has been actively seeking part time positions. With the help of the Beacon Employment Specialist, Maggie has learned job search skills, professionalism and effective interview skills. Despite the setback of many fruitless job applications, she was finally employed by the SF Parks and Rec for an intern position.

The Coordinator In Training Program promotes a boundless future

Ratima is an upstanding senior, with charisma and wit in spade. As an aspiring attorney, she plans to attend law school one day. She performed exceptionally well in the interview for the Coordinator In Training Program, and was awarded the position for which she worked for 6 weeks. With her great interpersonally skills and professionalism, she represented the Bayview Beacon program well when she made numerous program phone calls, and spoke well among her peers when she facilitated at employment training workshops. Through the CIT program, she has learned the important skills of professionalism, public speaking, as well as database management. Ratima is opting to attend Contra Costa City College first, before transferring to a four-year college to save cost.

Job Search Workshop of the Employment Services Program is a success

Mr. Cheng is a recent Chinese immigrant of two years. 6 months ago, he resigned from his warehousing position, due to bad work conditions and unrealistic work hours. With two sons to take care of, Mr. Cheng’s meager unemployment barely makes ends meet. Three weeks ago, he participated in the Job Search Workshop of the Employment Services Program. Due to his language difficulty and lack of a high school diploma, he had trouble finding gainful employment outside of ethnic businesses. Recently, through collaboration with the Chinatown One Stop Center, Mr. Cheng filed for the Job Now certification, and acquired a position with an Iron Workshop in San Bruno. Mr. Cheng was ecstatic to be working again, and is currently interested in attending the ESL class to be provided through the Beacon Program, to further expand his future employability.

Coordinator in Training Program is a stepping stone for personal achievement

Steven is currently an 11th grader attending the Burton High School. He is among the few that passed the selection process for the Coordinator in Training program. With his soft demeanor and attentive studiousness, Steven was exemplary CIT always looking complete tasks timely and efficiently. Besides participation in the CIT program, he is also involved in the San Francisco Red Cross as a student volunteer. Recently, he’s elected the student president at the Red Cross.

Bayview Beacon Center reaches out to help save a teacher's career

Kenyatta is a new math teacher at the Burton High School and an active member of the community church. Previously a Senior Data Analyst at Kaiser Permanente, he gave up the corporate career to teach in Burton, to give back to the community where he grew up. Passionate and genuine, Kenyatta revels in the challenge to educate his low-income students. Despite his belief of education, however, he was faced with the dilemma when he was pink-slipped by Burton. Through the help of the employment specialist at the Bayview Beacon, he had his resume revised and attended career counseling sessions, and was ready to accept the fate that he might have to return to the corporate world. At last, he was recruited by the Metro High School principal, and will continue his teaching career.

A celebrated graduation at Bayview Beacon Saturday School

Through the Bayview Beacon Saturday School program, Trina, a parent of a student at Burton High School, was enrolled in our GED class and with the help of the instructor, successfully passed the GED exam. She graduated last week from the GED program. Ms. Trina was in our office this week for a meeting and during a break excitedly showed off her graduation pictures to Beacon staff.
