Capital Campaign Project

The Bayview Hunters Point YMCA is the only community center in this greatly diverse, deeply challenged part of the City delivering reliable, comprehensive programs to build healthy youth, healthy individuals and a healthy community.

Since its founding in 1997, the Bayview Hunters Point YMCA has rapidly grown to serve over 6,000 people.  A beacon in a neighborhood plagued with social upheaval, illness and hopelessness, our YMCA supports people to meet their goals throughout life to strengthen spirit, mind and body.

Our biggest focus is on youth, and we put family at the heart of all we do. When the building renovation is completed in the summer of 2010, we’ll have the facility we need to double our community reach to 12,000 people out of the neighborhood’s population of 33,000—touching more lives by far than any other organization serving the area.

To build the Bayview Hunters Point YMCA branch, the YMCA of San Francisco acquired a former elementary school building in the center of our neighborhood and launched a campaign to renovate it as a YMCA. To date, we have:

  • Purchased the three-story, 37,000 sq. foot property at 1601 Lane Street
  • Renovated the gymnasium
  • Renovated the stage
  • Opened a dance studio
  • Renovated and opened the second story for program use
  • Built an outdoor play area
  • Resurfaced the parking lot
  • Opened a new computer center
  • Opened a basic fitness and workout area
  • Added seismic improvements to the building
  • Opened a new entryway including landscaped patio, reception lobby, administrative area, community room, toilets, elevator and stair tower
  • Finished plans for the final phase of construction

The fully renovated building will be custom-designed to provide an efficient, attractive and environmentally conscious space in which we can develop our programs, with a special focus on building healthy lives in our community.

Remaining features of the capital project and their estimated completion dates include:

  • Construction of an Early Childhood Development Center (Summer 2011)
  • Construction of the Kitchen and Nutrition Center (Summer 2011)

When finished, the site will be properly equipped to support our life-changing YMCA programs for generations to come.
