The YMCA Health, Habits and Community

An Introduction to Wellness
Our Stonestown Family YMCA is a place where adults and families join with others in the pursuit of their total health. Total health programs facilitate each member's ability to develop a healthy spirit, mind, and body. Wellness is a condition of good health maintained by physical activity, sound nutrition, stress reduction, and social and spiritual growth. Wellness is the ability to endure the stresses of everyday life, and have enough energy left to enjoy one's leisure time.

To accomplish this goal of total health, we have created programs and classes to help members focus on each component of wellness. Group exercise instructors conduct physical activity classes such as floor aerobics, cycling, aquatics, or dance to challenge the heart and lungs. We provide strength and conditioning classes to help members maintain healthy bones and muscles.

Members learn about healthy food choices, portion control and behavior modification. Moreover, the classes help members develop a healthy body image and acceptance of a realistic body composition. We combine stress management classes with classes such as t'ai chi and yoga to help members manage stress.

With all the wonderful programs and classes come excellent instructors and Wellness Coaches who build relationships with members. These relationships motivate members to continue this newfound lifestyle for life. Members will find supportive staff and volunteers who will work with them to continually keep their YMCA experiences in line with their lifestyle, physical conditions, stage of life, and individual choices.

We invite each of you to meet with one of our Wellness Coaches for a free consultation and orientation. Together we will build relationships that will help us all find total health and wellness.

Stonestown Family YMCA Wellness Ambassadors
A new support group founded and sustained by member and volunteers to provide leadership and support to the YMCA fundraising efforts. The Ambassadors form relationships and networks that help maintain the Total Health program. The goal of the Ambassadors is to have the volunteers play a leadership role in a program area and to play supporting and leadership roles in raising funds for the YMCA.
Volunteers are welcomed and needed.

The Cancer Wellness Program

The Need: Cancer is second only to heart disease as the leading cause of death in the USA. One thing that is clear from the current research:  cancer patients who perform exercise have improved quality of life in areas of pain management, outlook on life and the effects of nausea.

The Benefits of Cancer Wellness Programs
The benefit derived by having patients participate in programs with other patients is significant. The program is supportive of their recovery process in that the supporter becomes part of the health care team, physician, social worker, and physical therapist. Exercise sessions can be structured in a class format, or individualized for each participants different protocols.

The Purpose of Cancer Wellness
Our primary focus is to condition the spirit, mind and body of anyone currently dealing with cancer or who is a cancer survivor.  The adventure goes on despite the illness.

1. Give participants increased confidence and ability to be in charge of certain aspects of the healing and recovery process.
2. Increase cardiovascular endurance of participant.
3. Increase strength of participant.
4. Improve, teach, and maintain appropriate flexibility.
5. Ensure participant has knowledge to utilize various cardiovascular modalities and equipment.
6. Ensure participant has knowledge in use of various machine, free weight, body weight or tubing formats of progressive resistive exercise.
7. Increase self and body awareness and knowledge of rate of perceived exertion during and after exercise program.

The 10-Step Approach:
Step 1   Perform pre-exercise health risk assessment
Step 2   Obtain physician clearance
Step 3   Identify exercise benefits
Step 4   Determine acute exercise risks
Step 5   Prepare for medical emergencies
Step 6   Obtain informed consent
Step 7   Plan baseline "fitness" testing
Step 8   Design exercise program
Step 9   Plan exercise program implementation
Step 10 Double check established guidelines

Strength and Conditioning

For the safety of all concerned, the minimum age for working out in the Strength and Conditioning Centers is 12. No one under 12 years of age will be allowed to use the room or the equipment.

Wellness Programs
The key to successfully integrating exercise into your lifestyle is to do it gradually. The objectives are to identify barriers, develop a healthy habit and become comfortable in the gym environment. You will be working with a trainer to develop a specific program with your specific needs in mind. Each program is individualized and will vary in length depending on the needs of the member.
Cost: Free by appointment with fitness trainer
Appointments may be set when you join or at the podium in the Strength and Conditioning Room.

Strength Training
Strength training is the use of resistance methods to increase one's ability to exert or resist force. The training may utilize free weights, your own body weight, or resistance machines. Equipment Orientation and Program Development
A free service that introduces you to all of our equipment. You and a trainer will discuss your fitness goals and then you will be instructed on how to use Fitlinxx as a training partner. You will also discover what seat positions match your body dimensions. A review of weight amounts and number of sets will ensure that you are getting what you need in working towards your personal goals.

Fitlinxx:  Interactive Fitness Network
You and your trainer will design an exercise program suited for you. With the help of Fitlinxx, your program will be tracked and monitored by you and your trainer. Fitlinxx does this by sending your workout to each piece of equipment. You will receive instant feedback while using each piece of equipment. Fitlinxx tells you where to set your seat position as well as how many repetitions and sets to do. It monitors your range of motion and lift speed. Fitlinxx tracks your workouts so that you and your trainer can monitor the progress towards your fitness goals.
