The Feldenkrais Method ®

Awareness Through Movement

Upcoming Monthly Workshops on Sundays:

June 22, July 20, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Fee:  Free for YMCA members, but pre-registration at the front desk is requested.  A $12 day pass is required for non-YMCA members.

Awareness Through Movement ® education lessons will be experienced in exploring movement strategies to reduce the strain, discomfort, and effort you create in the daily functional use of your neck, shoulders and arms. Clarifying these relationships will bring you greater comfort, improved posture, increased gracefulness and enhanced flexibility.

The instructor is Kaz Shibao, who is a Certified Feldenkrais ® Practioner, Certified Orthopedic Massage Therapist and Health/Fitness Instructor (ACSM). He works with chronic pain clients at the Institute for Health & Healing, part of California Pacific Medical Center.

HEALTH & WELLNESS CLASSES

Wellness is a condition of good spiritual, physical, and mental health that is maintained through a combination of proper diet, exercise, and sound habits. Members will find supportive staff who will work with them to continually shape their YMCA experience in line with their lifestyle, stage of life and individual choices.

We offer approximately 95 health and wellness classes weekly, all included in your facility membership. Our YMCA instructors are nationally certified and lead classes for all ages and fitness levels. With the number and variety of classes offered, you are certain to find classes suited to your needs.  Our group exercise class schedules are printed weekly, available in our flyer racks.

Body Sculpting

The use of resistance bands and hand weights provides a body conditioning experience that allows for the slow, progressive development of healthy bones and muscles.

Jazz Dance

A fun, basic workout for dancers and non-dancers alike, this class begins with warm-ups, isolations and core work, followed by a high-energy yet low-impact dance routine.

JumpStart!

An intense strength and conditioning workout.  Learn how to engage and activate the core to provide control, and how to maintain the spine in neutral alignment in different planes of  motion.  Includes cardio-drills, manual resistance training and plyometrics.

Nia“Through Movement We Find Health”

Increase your body-mind-spirit connection through movement. Combining carefully selected movements and concepts from Yoga, T’ai Chi, Tae Kwon Do, Aikido, Jazz, Modern Dance and other movement modalities, Nia classes offer total-body cardiovascular conditioning and cross-training for any sport or activity.  All Nia movements are adaptable for any level of fitness and agility.

Pilates (pronounced puh-LAH-teez)pronounced puh-LAH-teez)

This mat class focuses on developing core stability, improving posture and alignment, and maintaining balance and flexibility. Based on the work of Joseph Pilates, the exercises are utilized by dancers, runners and exercise enthusiasts alike, to increase range of motion throughout the body and to develop movement and breathing coordination

PowerHouse Abs

A 45-minute blast for your abdominals and lower back. The best of Pilates techniques is combined with the ideal sequence for working your abs, lower back, and other stabilizer muscles -- to make your core a powerhouse of strength and conditioning.

Qigong (pronounced chee-GUNG)

Since the sixth century, the ancient art of 18 Buddha Hands Qigong has been treasured as a means of promoting health, treating and preventing diseases, and increasing longevity. The primary focus in Qigong is to have the breath, body, and mind moving together. The exercises are designed to enhance circulation and create internal balance, resulting in improved balance, strength and coordination

T’ai Chi
This ancient martial art is known for relaxing the body, calming the mind and rejuvenating the spirit. With regular practice, t'ai chi can also complement your workout, enhance your mental clarity and ease the aging process.  We offer classes in t
wo different styles:

Yang Tai Chi- This is the most commonly practiced style of t'ai chi. Pacing is uniformly slow throughout the 37-posture form, with little variation in speed during transitions. Continuity, without break or pause, is the key.

Chen Tai Chi- Chen style is characterized by deeper (lower) stances, by circles and twists, and by varied pacing. The pace varies varies from almost a standstill to explosive power moves, from lulls to crescendos.

Yoga
A perfect class for all levels of fitness and experience. The many benefits of yoga are legendary: more energy, vitality, flexibility, better digestion, sounder sleep and quietness of mind.

Feldenkrais (monthly workshops on Sundays)
…Awareness Through Movement ®

The Feldenkrais model was originally developed by the Russian Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais in the 1940s in order to heal his own recurrent knee injury (caused by his hobby of playing football). Its objective is to create new neuromuscularpathways in the body by means of natural, graceful movements.  Students are taught to observe minute changes in the way their bodies undertake everyday actions, and to re-learn how to move while in correct postural alignment.
