(Fitness Leadership Experience)

School Year Hours: Monday - Friday, 3:30-6:30 PM

Summer Hours: Monday - Friday, 1:00-5:00 PM

Ages: High School (14-18)

FLEX (Fitness Leadership Experience) is a free program aimed at increasing the health and fitness awareness of San Francisco's high school youth. The FLEX program was created toexpose teens who have little to no physical activity on a regular basis to a fun, interesting, cooperative, health and fitness environment.  Here teens can gain instruction and advice on healthy eating and exercise habits as well as learn how to incorporate healthy living measures into their everyday life.  This after-school program is a great way for students to stay in shape and meet new people.  FLEX members have access to our workout facility as well as a variety of classes and activities including: Yoga, Capoiera, Breakdancing, Skateboarding, and Cooking just to name a few. FLEX is a free program thanks to the Department of Children, Youth and their Families.

FLEX Skate

Hours: Saturdays, 11:00-2:00 PM

Ages: High School and Middle School (11-18)

Experienced staff will teach beginners the basics of skateboarding and help intermediate skaters master their tricks at FLEX Skate. Portable ramps we will be set up every Saturday for students to use. Thanks to Purple Skunk and FTC skate shops , boards and protective gear are available for anyone who does not have their own equipment. FLEX Skate takes place at Fulton and Cabrillo Playgrounds.  Contact Crissie of program schedule. FLEX Skate is a free program thanks to the Department of Children, Youth and their Families.

FLEX Teen Leadership Council

Hours: Meets once a month

Ages: High School (14-18)

Teen Leadership Council (TLC) is a fantastic program where high school students can become more involved with the YMCA and the Richmond community and, at the same time, develop their own leadership skills. The TLC gives high school teens an opportunity tolearn more about themselves and their powers of influence through initiative and leadership games. Activities include planning YMCA teen department events and programs; putting on workshops for other teens on issues important to teens; and giving back to the environment and the community through service projects.  FLEX TLC is a free program thanks to the Department of Children, Youth and their Families.

Presidio Middle School
Mighty Panthers After School Program

Hours: Monday-Friday, After school to 6:00 PM

Ages: Presidio Middle School students only (11-14)

The Mighty Panthers After School Program at Presidio Middle School is a great place to have fun, get some homework done, make new friends, and learn new skills, games, sports,and arts. The Richmond District YMCA runs this program in collaboration with the Richmond Village Beacon. Our staff provide instruction in cooking, basketball, baseball, sewing, girls club, boys club, hip-hop, debate, and bowling. Come and join us for some after school fun and growth!

FREE Aikido Class

Spring Session: June 16th - August 18th, 2008

Hours: Every Monday at 5:00-6:00 PM

Ages: Middle School (11-14)

Aikido is a Japanese martial art involving throws and joint locks where teens will learn self defense and movement awareness. In this class teens will gain self-confidence and self-awareness through exercise of the mind, body and spirit.  The class will meet every Monday in Studio 2 at the Richmond District YMCA.  Boys and girls are welcome.  Come in and sign up now, space is limited.  Aikido is a free program thanks to the Department of Children, Youth and their Families.

GO/GSA at Washington High School

GO (Get Out) is a Washington High School program for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning youth that is run in collaboration with the Richmond District YMCA and the Richmond Village Beacon. It is a place where LGBTQQ youth can find and build a supportive community together and contribute to public awareness and education through fun events at Washington HS and the larger San Francisco community.

GSA (Gay Straight Alliance) is a Washington HS group that meets on Thursdays in the Beacon room on campus. The GSA is for students, both gay and straight, who want to learn about LGBTQQ issues and fight homophobia in their community.

Youth & Government

This program is a statewide youth educational program involving 90+ YMCAs and more than 2,200 high school sophomores, juniors and seniors, in a six month "hands on" experience. The program begins in September when youth, advisors, and volunteers meet as individual delegations to discuss issues facing California, as well as ways to implement their solutions through legislative and judicial processes. The program reaches its peak in Sacramento at the State Capitol with the convening of the five day Model Legislature & Court each February.
