The Richmond District YMCA is embarking on our 2008 Strong Communities Campaign.  Our campaign theme this year is "Building Your Strong Community".  The YMCA truly is a bottom-up organization that is built upon the strength, energy, and contributions of its members.  Our community programs all run at a significant deficit, and would be unable to continue, let alone thrive, without the direct financial investment of our engaged community members.  In an attempt to further expand the reach and impact we have on our community, we have set a goal of doubling our community support campaign over a five year period.  We are in our second year of this initiative and have set an ambitious goal of $100,000 for this years' campaign.  Your contribution will help us achive this goal of expanding our community programs.  When you give to the Richmond District YMCA's Strong Communities Campaign, you become an active partner in the important work we do.

Building Your Strong

Spirit, Mind, and Body

Obesity and poor health are affecting communities across the country. The Richmond District YMCA is a place where you and your family can come to do something about this epidemic. We offer a full range of health and fitness options to help people take charge of their health and create a lifestyle that reflects their highest values, including: an open, inviting fitness floor with modern workout equipment; a dedicated free weight room; two studios packed with aerobic, enrichment, and wellness classes; and personal training with approachable and motivating trainers.  We strongly believe that fitness is a right and not a privilege, and turn no one interested in becoming more fit and healthy away for lack of means. Our Strong Communities Campaign allows us to offer fitness member financial aid for those who need it.

Building Your Strong

Youth

The Richmond District YMCA is a place where kids come to learn, grow, and play in a safe environment with caring staff who can serve as role models for them. We offer a full array of progamming for youth, including afterschool programs at Argonne and Lafayette elementary schools, dance and creative movement programs, family fun days, full day camps during holidays, and a summer day camp.  These programs play an important role in the lives of the families they serve. Busy parents need places that engage their children, help them to develop healthy habits, and teach them character and new skills. Families need places to come together with other families and grow and celebrate together. Thanks to support from our Strong Communities Campaign, the Richmond District YMCA can be just such a place for all who need it.

Building Your Strong

Teens

For many, the teenage years can be a time of loneliness, confusion, negative influence, and risk. The Richmond District YMCA helps to make teens’ lives more positive, engaging, hopeful, and healthy.  We offer a diverse range of teen programming, including: a Friday Night Teen Center for middle school youth; Girlforce - a self esteem and healthy choices program for young women; FLEX - a high school aged fitness, leadership, and lifeskills program; Y-Skate - a skateboarding program on the weekends; and the Gay-Straight-Alliance at Washington High School, which helps LGBT young people find acceptance and support. All of these programs are offered at no cost, and would not be possible without the continued support of our Strong Communities Campaign.

Building Your Strong

Seniors

As San Francisco’s population ages, more and more adults will reach retirement without the network of support that smaller communities can provide. The Richmond District YMCA’s Active Older Adults (AOA) programs can help to address this need by supporting seniors to stay fit, be engaged, and build community together.  At the Y, seniors can participate in volunteering for our foodbank and bread program, fitness programs like Sit-n-be-Fit, flower arranging classes, and social events like luncheons, bridge club, and holiday events.  All of these programs and activities help to fight the isolation and physical atrophy that impede the health and well being of all of us, but especially the seniors in our communities. We are only able to offer these programs and services at little to no cost to seniors through the generous contributions that people like you make to our Strong Communities Campaign.
