Fall 2008
Youth & Government, Marin YMCA, September 2008-Feburary 2009
Don’t let the title fool you…this program is fun! If you want to get to know teens from other high schools in the area, have fun and learn a little about government along the way this is for you! This six month program offers the rare opportunity to learn first-hand the inner workings of our state government. Participants gain confidence learning public speaking skills and voicing their opinions while hearing others’. Learning about government not really your cup of tea? Join the Court or Media programs and get a different perspective, arguing a court case or running the T.V. program. Meetings are held once a week and focus on team building and self discovery. This program includes two, three-day trips to Camp Roberts in Paso Robles, where participants learn about all program areas, picking one that interests them, and perfecting their skills. The program culminates with a five day trip to Sacramento where teens literally take over the capitol. During this final conference, teens take the skills they have learned and apply them to use on the actual Senate and Assembly floors, the courthouse, and the Supreme Court Chambers. No other program in California is given this opportunity. Every conference night, teens are able to let loose with activities such as dances, jump houses, games, and more. It is an experience that cannot be missed! Great on college resumes! All housing and most meals included. High school students only (9th-12th).

Spring 2009
Model United Nations, Marin YMCA, February 2008-May 2008
This is the filter program for Youth & Government and is run in much the same way, but with a global, as opposed to state, perspective. MUN meets once a week where youth pick at least one country to represent, learning their culture and beliefs. The first of two conferences is held at Camp Roberts in Paso Robles where youth are trained in the different program areas and learn about cultural diversity and acceptance, public speaking and more. Youth apply that knowledge to debates and discussions at the second conference in Pasadena, Ca. speaking on their country’s behalf on a variety of issues such as peace treaties, disease, hunger, and much more. Not all work and no play! Every conference evening there are activities such as bounce houses, dances, etc. to help wind down from the day’s events. This is a great way to meet new people and learn about other cultures along the way. All housing and most meals included. Middle-school students only (6th-8th).
