From the Executive Director
I want to take this opportunity to explain the YMCA's mission and relay our initial efforts in becoming a green business. The work here at the Marin YMCA, a nonprofit since 1946, includes helping people in difficult times by offering scholarships to anyone who cannot afford to pay the full price for our programs and services. As the economy continues to decline, more people are being hit by losing their jobs, retirement savings, homes, and much more. Our work at the Y is to help everyone continue to benefit from the many Y offerings that help us build strong kids, strong families and strong communities.
The decision to eliminate the sweat towel comes after much discussion, number crunching and understanding that members will most likely be upset about the decision and inconvenienced. At the same time, this move allows for a savings of about $60,000 a year and helps us meet the increased demand for financial assistance. As the economy fell into complete free fall, the decision to eliminate the sweat towels effective February 1st was made, allowing us to save money and to continue our mission work here at the Marin YMCA.
Moreover, the elimination of the sweat towels moves us a step closer to going green. Fewer towels brought to the facility mean fewer truck deliveries, and the reduction in vendor supplied towels helps conserve energy and water. Other efforts in going green include changing out the light fixtures for energy efficient ones and a plan to reduce the consumption of natural gas with a change in our water heating system.
I truly appreciate your involvement in our YMCA and do apologize for the inconvenience to you.
Most sincerely,
Jennifer Smith
Executive Director
