Computer Lab
Homework Hour
Homework hour occurs Monday – Thursday afternoons from 4pm – 5pm. All computers are available for research, writing, and projects. There is always youth staff available to assist in homework and studying. We also have a variety of tutors who come in throughout the week and can also help with specific topics.
Photoshop
Run by our Graphic Design Gurus, Eric and Melana, this class teaches the basics of Photoshop. The youth will learn to take their favorite photos and manipulate then into fun art projects. At the end of this course there will be a Photoshop design contest with first, second, and third prizes…possibly even a new computer with all of the programs needed to continue with Photoshop at home!!
Refurbishing
Youth members come fix their computers, or computers that have been donated, in this hands-on classroom. The classroom time is spent repairing, dismantling, and troubleshooting old/new computers that will go back into the community. Some youth members have also had the opportunity to take the computer home that they have rebuilt and programmed with the newest hard and software.
Microsoft Office
This is a drop-in class featuring Word, Access, Excel, Power Point, Publisher, and Visio. Youth will learn the basics of each program and apply them to their daily use with resume writing, homework, projects, etc…
Get Going!! Encouraged for our 18 – 22 year old members!!
This workshop provides assistance in searching for jobs, writing resumes, pre-interview and post-interview advice and preparation, mock interviews, and help writing cover letters. There will also be field trips to companies of interest to the youth involved.
Mouse Squad
This workshop provides an online multimedia approach to understanding everything about computers including hardware, software, trouble shooting, and basic programming. Our volunteer, Karen, brings in exciting and motivating opportunities for the youth to see how this applies to every day careers through internships and externships. As an incentive our youth are paid for fixing individual computers and other technology accessories.
Arts
Street Art
Al, our CELLSpace Street Art instructor, teaches our youth the fundamentals of Street Art, using graffiti in a positive form of expression. Our youth will be designing and creating canvases to hang in our clubhouse. During the past workshops the youth have created t-shirts, murals, and personal sketches.
Music Lab
We have a music lab open to all members for their own beat making, recording, and musical needs. We have Protools and Reasons, as well as a keyboard and microphone. Periodically, we have volunteers instructing the youth in how to run these programs to their needs. Many of our youth are familiar with these programs and assist the other youth who have an interest in learning about the music lab.
Hip Hop Dance
Our longtime youth member and new Young Adult member, Candy, teaches the younger youth the latest hip-hop, jazz, and contemporary dance moves while listening to their favorite music.
Health and Fitness
Girls Get Fit!!
Girls Group is a time for our young women to empower themselves through exercise, positive expression, and healthy living habits. The girls will be set up on FitLinxx in our Fitness Center, learn how to safely handle all equipment, easy warm up and cool down exercises, core strengthening, healthy eating habits, and more!! Once you complete a four week fitness orientation with a youth staff and meet with a Wellness Coordinator you would be able to work out on your own on the 5th floor during youth department hours.
Swimming
Open to all levels, out youth can just take a dip in our heated pool, swim laps, or get a lesson from on of our certified swim instructors.
Sole Stroll
Lead by our Super-Staff, Mike, the youth check out the surrounding neighborhoods by foot. Each stroll ends at a predetermined snack spot where the youth get a healthy, refreshing snack.
Basketball
Our 12 – 17 year old coed basketball team practices every Monday night and plays league games against surrounding teen centers in our gym on Friday evenings. Practices are run each week by our enthusiastic Coach Matt.
Our 18 – 22 year olds are also involved in league games through the Buchanan YMCA of San Francisco. The games are Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
Soccer
Soccer is back!!! This is open to all youth 12-17 years old who are interested in playing or want to practice between seasons. Come check it out!! We have two amazing volunteers who will coach and lead practices Wednesdays 5-7pm.
Young Adult Pick-Up Basketball Games
Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 8pm – 9:30 pm our older youth gather with other YMCA members and hotel guests for a big game of basketball.
Cooking
With our resident chef, Kelvin, members prepare, cook, and eat their meals family style. All the youth involved help choose the meal, prepare the dishes, cook, eat together and clean up their recipes range from 4 course meals to homemade pizza.
