The Vision
In 1906 San Francisco’s devastating earthquake destroyed our original building on the corner of Mason and Ellis. By November of that year our YMCA had raised $500,000 towards a new building on the corner of Golden Gate and Leavenworth that would serve the Tenderloin community for the next 100 years. Now, in 2005, in keeping with our mission of providing the Tenderloin community with quality programs and services, it is with great excitement that we announce our dream of creating a brand new Shih Yu-Lang Central YMCA.
Our goal is to build a new state-of-the-art Shih Yu-Lang Central YMCA that will have the space to significantly increase the capacity and quality of our programs and services while maintaining our commitment to the Tenderloin community.
The Process
The sale of the building represents a large portion of the funds needed to build a new Y that will impact a major cross-section of the Tenderloin community. We will be looking to all of you for ideas, input and support. You are the Y – join us for the journey ahead.

August 10, 2005
A purchase agreement was signed by A.F.Evans Development Inc. on August 9, 2005, formally beginning the process of buying the building and the two adjacent lots from the YMCA. This purchase agreement is the first step in acheiving our dream of building our new state-of-the-art YMCA in the Tenderloin. It is one of many steps in a multi-year process and will not effect any changes in the day to day operations of this YMCA. To learn more read our press release and a more in depth building update.
