About the Senior Program
Our Senior Membership Program exists to significantly improve and positively influence the quality of life for older adults in our community. Emphasis is placed on the whole person through programs that develop physical, mental, spiritual and social well-being. Membership here in the heart of San Francisco crosses lines of income, ethnic origin, life-style and neighborhood location. We are a diverse, interested and interesting group of seniors from all walks of life.
Character counts! The Senior Program is committed to providing a welcoming and safe environment to every member and guest, incorporating and promoting the values of caring, respect, honestly and responsibility.
Senior Membership Types
There are two components to Senior Membership - access to our Senior Center and access to our Athletic Facility
Senior Center
The Senior Center at Shih Yu-Lang Central YMCA is open Monday-Friday, 8:30am-4:00pm. Members can come and go at their convenience, relaxing in an inviting environment and enjoying social interaction with other members. In the Center coffee and tea are available throughout the day, and free features include a library, video library, and computers with internet access. The Center also offers the “Ticket Table” where free tickets are regularly offered to a wide assortment of music, theatre, dance, and sporting events. (There is a nominal fee for participation in the Ticket Table.) A variety of activities/events take place in the Senior Center ranging from guest speakers, educational forums, potluck meals, parties, and field trips. (See Activities)

Exercise Classes
Free Fitness Training
Senior members can receive (8) free sessions with one of the YMCA fitness personnel. These sessions are a wonderful aid for new members and give instruction on weight machines, Fitlinxx, and exercising in general. For seniors re-entering the world of fitness, individual training with a certified fitness instructor helps to develop an individual program for the participant.
Senior Aerobics
This class combines group instruction and practice in stretching, light hand weights, aerobics, wall exercises and cool-down mat work for a full body work out.
Sit and Be Fit
This class offers stretching and the use of light hand weights and tension bands while seated for those with disabilities or infirmities that prevent participation in other exercise programs.
Tai Chi
Fosters good health, increases energy, relaxation, enhances endurance, strength building, good breathing, and increased flexibility.
YCT (YMCA Cardiac Therapy)
Designed for people with heart conditions, high blood pressure and other related issues. Participants have their blood pressure taken before aerobics, stretch and weight exercises. This program has extra fees associated with it.
Senior Aqua Aerobics
Low-impact aerobics in the pool builds strength, muscle tone and heart rate through water resistance exercises.
Strengthening for Fall Prevention
This class focuses on strengthening of core muscles vital for balance. Segments include hand weights, stability balls, stretching bands, and fancy footwork.
Meditation
Vipassana meditation is a Buddhist meditation technique for mental development to strengthen concentration, calm the mind and modify reactions caused by strong feelings such as anger and stress. This meditation technique can be done while sitting in a chair
Gentle Yoga
This class is specifically tailored for older adults. You need not fear straining yourself or getting tied up like a pretzel! Beginners are most definitely welcome - no experience required!
Activities

Financial Consultation

Health Screenings
In conjunction with the California Health Resource Center, the Senior Center offers different health screenings on a regular basis. Screenings include topics such as blood pressure, glucose, bone density and cholesterol.
Trip, Tours, etc.
The Senior Center regularly plans trips, and tours for its members to area locations. Check the Center for more information regarding these activities.
Concerts, Theatre, and More!
Discount and FREE tickets for concerts, theatre, dance, sporting events and other productions are regularly available to Senior members. Information is available at the Senior Center.
Potluck Lunches
The Senior Center regularly feature potluck lunches where members bring their favorite recipes for others to enjoy.
Volunteers
We have a tremendous volunteer program, with projects that range from reception and program planning, to instructing classes and computer wizardry. As a volunteer you get involved with your life and the lives of others by the sharing of leadership abilities or learning new ones. Your day can be as full as you want it to be. Volunteers are the backbone of our Senior Program. Their ideas, skills, talents, energy and time are what make this program work.
Everyone is welcome to be a YMCA volunteer! How about you? For more information contact Greg Moore at (415) 447-2508.
